The hurricane season in Florida and the Gulf of Mexico runs from about June 1 until November 30. And with Hurricanes Katrina and Rita still fresh in a lot of people’s minds, there is legitimate concern about vacationing along Florida’s Gulf Coast in the summer.
- Should you avoid traveling to Siesta Key and Sarasota during hurricane season?
- Should you only plan a vacation to a place that will let you cancel last minute in case of inclement weather?
- And if you do travel down, do you need to make sure you get a unit with hurricane shutters?
First, let me allay your fears. While recent hurricanes may cause some to worry, it turns out there is really very little to worry about.
Why do I say that?
Because Sarasota, Florida, has never had a direct hit by a hurricane since record-keeping began in 1871. This could be because Sarasota is on the Gulf side of the state, about halfway between the panhandle and the Everglades. It is well protected compared to places like Miami.
Also of interest, Sarasota has only sustained damage from hurricanes on three occasions: 1926, 1944 and 1950. Keep in mind, these were not direct hits on Sarasota, but rather close brushes as the hurricanes passed by.
This means Sarasota has not seen any hurricane activity at all since 1950… more than 60 years ago!
Coincidentally, my neighbor two doors down grew up in Sarasota, Florida. She told me she’d never think twice to vacation in Sarasota or Siesta Key during hurricane season. She said the media always makes a big deal out of hurricane season, but the chances of one actually hitting the area are about zero.
And even if a hurricane did come through, she said, it wouldn’t be a big deal to sit it out. Most hurricanes cause only minor damage.
Now, this is just her opinion. But she did spend more than 20 years in Sarasota, so she’s lived through quite a few hurricane seasons.
Ultimately, you should not let hurricane season stop you from vacationing in Sarasota or on Siesta Key. And, personally, I would not worry too much about last-minute cancellation policies or hurricane shutters — you probably won’t use either.
